Paragraphs consist of one or more sentences that relate to one idea. A new paragraph signals to the reader that a new idea is forthcoming.

There are two points we wish to make about paragraphs of text:

  • how they are delineated, and
  • how they are justified

To make it easy for the reader to identify when a new idea is being presented, it makes sense to highlight the difference between one paragraph and the next one.

As you can see *, paragraphs are much easier to distinguish from one another if they are indented or if white space is left between them.
