There have been a number of studies > investigating the use of different colors of text on different background colors. The results, however, have not always been in accord with previous studies, for several possible reasons:

  • the type and capability of equipment used in the studies has not always been clearly specified. Earlier hardware was capable of displaying only a very limited number of colors; some even wasn't capable of displaying lower-case text

  • the tasks undertaken in the research studies have not necessarily been equivalent. They have varied from simple searches for specific letters embedded in a matrix or for specific words or information, to reading comprehension tasks and learners' subjective preferences
  • in some cases contrast between text and backgrounds was manipulated (or at least considered) while in other cases it defaulted to whatever the equipment could reproduce.
