Good practice of instructional design for animation is no different from other media. But there are a few uniqe functions and characteristics of animation which deserve mention.

Park and Hopkins > offered a handful of instructional functions of animation. One function of animation is to guide attention. Animated visuals can serve to guide and direct the learner's attention to a key feature or property of the content.

While directing attention can be a good idea in some instruction, using animation to attract attention can backfire. Attention may be drawn away from other salient information, or the animations may be more annoying than helpful. How much were you distracted by these animations as you tried to read this page?
