Good practice of instructional design for
animation is no different from other media. But
there are a few uniqe functions and characteristics
of animation which deserve mention.
Park and
Hopkins > offered a handful of
instructional functions of animation. One function
of animation is to guide attention. Animated
visuals can serve to guide and direct the learner's
attention to a key feature or property of the
content.

While directing attention can be a good idea in
some instruction, using animation to attract
attention can backfire. Attention may be drawn away
from other salient information, or the animations
may be more annoying than helpful. How much were
you distracted by these animations as you tried to
read this page?
